- Consistently Low Chlorine: The most obvious sign. Even with the system output turned up to 100%, the pool turns cloudy or green because no sanitizer is being produced.
- Inaccurate Salt Readings: If the control panel says your salt is dangerously low, but a manual water test shows the salt level is actually perfect (usually around 3,200 ppm), the cell's internal sensor has failed.
- "Inspect Cell" Warning Lights: While this sometimes just means the cell needs a routine acid wash to remove calcium buildup, a persistent light often means the internal plates are completely depleted.
- Visible Plate Degradation: If you look inside the cell and the titanium plates look worn, chipped, or are missing their dark ruthenium coating, it's time for a replacement.
